Is there a good test or way of determining how much soap residue is left in a carpet? I know of the rubbing a glass cup over wet carpet but that only seems to work with heavy residue.

Spray some water and agitate, see if it foams.

If it feels slick to the hand there is soap there

just be concious of the areas that got sprayed down heavier they will also need more rinsing

Over all soiling is your first clue.

Ask the owner who cleaned it last

Unless it's a thin loop pile, don't worry, just do a great job
