My van overheated

I forgot to check the first bit of fresh water in a bucket this morning to look for coolant contamination. I don't have any work until next week now.

For now, how could a heat exchanger be busted and leaking little bits of coolant into the fresh water without flooding/overflowing my coolant reservoir? I saw my coolant reservoir filled to the top once, but it never overflowed. And I kept on using and using the machine and checking the parking lot, and nothing... What is the theory here?

If theres Internal compression fittings they can do really strange things like leak one way and seal when pressure is applied to the other side. This is rare but not unheard of and is possible that higher pressure seals and lower pressure leaks. My heat exchangers have internal compression fittings to connect the coils to inside of the canisters lid and outside top fittings
