It doesn't matter what method you use in 2025. You must get carpets clean and dry as fast as possible to survive in the carpet cleaning business. It's not the 1990's anymore and customers won't tolerate long dry times, wicking, dingy looking carpet, quick resoiling carpet. VLM eliminates all those problems. Wicking can still happen but is much less of a problem with VLM. The number one question I get is NOT where did the dirt go. It's how long will it take for the carpets to dry. 99% of the customers today don't care about the method. They just want clean dry carpet.

Go back and look. I have three pictures on this page and one pic on page 3. Do you see any corn rows ???

If you use stiff brushes to groom with on some carpets you could leave corn rows. I use soft wool brushes for grooming plus a 10'' CRB is very light

After I use the 14'' CRB to scrub it does leave some corn rows on some carpets but my OP takes those lines out and leaves light swirl marks on some carpets. The 10'' CRB takes the swirl marks out

10'' CRB grooms the carpet better than a brush. It would be faster to groom with a brush but I like the way a 10'' CRB grooms carpet

Do you remove and clean the brushes on the 10 in crb after every job to avoid cross contamination?

The reason Marty is pissy I’d because he misses Fred since this thread hasn’t been broken into two different threads like Fred would’ve fixed.

But Marty is probably one of the few that miss him, so it’s no big deal.

I would agree, let's see what Mikey P wants to do.

I think there is so much good, searchable information here that it would benefit those who lurk to see the "VLM vs HWE" discussion under that type of heading.

So, staying off topic cause it don’t really matter anyways, they’re gone they’re gone! They were never a factor to me. You don’t have to spend 25-50 k for a truckmount to get a carpet clean. There’s plenty out there for less, if you’re gonna do residential. I know there are chems supposedly for residential encap. I don’t know of any of Excellent Supply that’s an actually fit for that situation. I use em all except Encap basic or 1. I think the Encapstore would come closer to
that than anyone, but still.

It's hard to believe nobody here uses a CRB. I've been using a CRB for more than 10 years.

You guys don't release how much crap your vacuum misses. Especially in homes with pets and with people that rarely vacuum. All that pet hair gets packed down at the base of the carpet from being walked on thousands of times and your vacuum misses it. A CRB gets all the crap your vacuum misses.




A CRB is a must have for residential carpet cleaning VLM and HWE ... PERIOD !!!




For residential Carpet Cleaning I have on Van ...

I have backup's for everything on the Van

I have a different set up for Commercial Carpet Cleaning. Different vacuums OP's CRB's (Whittaker Trio)

I bring all my own water. I run it through a soft water tank and put it into 5 gallon and 2 1/2 gallon jugs. Yes soft water ABSOLUETLY makes a difference

I bought all my OP's from Excellent Supply, except Challenger, and use DS2 for CGD.

For residential I like VacAway Encap Green, VacAway Double Trouble and sometimes Carpet Details. I add VacAway Detonator (Peroxide) when needed. Trashed carpet usually found in rentals I use VacAway Commercial Magic.

Low odor is a must for Residential

I tried Encapstore last year but prefer VacAway, Carpet Details, and DS2

Still haven't tried Saiger's

I bought a GLS beck in the early 2000’s. I tried it on a few residentials. Once I saw what it was actually doing to the pile I stopped using it straight away. I actually liked it in commercial loop pile, but mine didn’t have a catch pan on it and I got REALLY tired of picking up nasty wet hair balls.

I don't know what year it was but I bought my first 15'' CRB off ebay. It was a Whittaker and had no trays. I got tired of picking up hair balls or sucking them up with my vacuum hose and clogging my filter.

Sold it on craigslist and bought a 15'' with trays. I still have that one in my basement. It never gets used anymore after I bought the 14'' from Excellent Supply



Question ... HONESTLY do you remember what brushes it had ??? Medium ??? Stiff ???

GLS is a Whittaker. They are the only company that sells CRB's without trays. Everything Whittaker sells is geared for CGD. I'm sure they were either Medium or Stiff

Mostly beautiful soft Nylon carpet back then in the early 200o's so you needed soft brushes for nylon




I have NEVER had a call back because of a corn rows or any other problem associated from using a CRB ... NEVER !!!

Whittaker made 4 brushes at that time. In the order of softest to the hardest they were(are):
White-wool rugs
Grey-cut pile
Blue- medium polyester and commery
Green - hardest commercial
I had grey, blue and green
The gray was very soft.

You haven’t been paying attention. There’s a lot on here that use crb’s. I have a 10 and 15, both with renovators. You do have to be careful with them on residential carpet, but don’t mean you can’t use them with the proper brushes. On most commercial, it don’t matter.
